One sunny afternoon in 1977 I was taking a walk with my future husband, Ron Davis when he demonstrated an effortless kenpo take down ON me! That was the beginning of my martial arts training. We joined the Gong Yuen Kung Fu Academy of Key Largo. Sifu Glenn C. Wilson was president of our school and Sifu James Hickey was our resident sifu. In that tiny room we sweated and stretched, working nightly on producing fluidity and power with our Kung Fu techniques. I was hooked for life!
Our paths had to divide in the early eighties with Ron and I moving to the state of Washington. I kept up with my stretching and carefully saved all my notes from Kung Fu.
Our daughter Amanda was born in 1985. When she entered the first grade she and I joined the only martial arts school in the area, Taekwon-do. After receiving my third Dan title I opened my school under the U.S.W.C. Taekwon-do Association. Althought an Olympic sport, and wonderful for physical fitness, this style did not capture my heart the way the grace and power of Kung Fu did years ago.
I was putting together a summer martial arts camp for kids in 2001 when the idea of Kung Fu was born again. Out came my Gong Yuen notes and the miracle of the Internet provided the gift of reunion with the now, Sitaigung Glenn C. Wilson.
Though the wisdon of Sitaigung, I have been able to review and refresh my Kung Fu skills, and have opened the first White Dragon Academy in Washington State! Our Academy is one and half years old and growing swiftly as the beauty of Pai Lum blossoms! |
